A wonderful collection of short stories which is Willa Cather's first work of fiction. The subject matter of the stories is the role and status of the artist in American society.

At the price you can retrieve this on Kindle, you should read all the Willa Cather you can. She has an amazingly modern voice for someone writing a century ago, and her stories still hold up over time. My favourites in this collection are: The Bohemian Girl; A Wagner Matinee; and Paul's Case. I prefer the short story and essay to long overwrought novel-writing (which Cather does not do--I'm thinking of Joyce Carol Oates and that sisterhood) but what amazes me in these stories is how much 1) I don't want them to end, or 2) I want to know even more about these characters (unlike recent works like "One Day" where I can't wait to get away from anyone described in the book). However, Cather was a skilled artist and knew when to end a story, and knew just how much to give us (in the manner of, say, a great poet).Product details

The Troll Garden and Selected Stories Willa Cather 9781484063255 Books Reviews
I have always loved everything from Willa Cather. She's a beautiful writer especially when she writes about her home country, the pioneer west.
Amusing stories with a serious message - strong female protagonist, unusual setting.
Good stories, especially Paul's case.
Nobody talks about Willa Cather much anymore. These stories are great, and her novels even greater. Sadly, this edition has some weird formatting and seems cheaply done. I'm going to look for a used edition.
Willa Cather remains a favorite author.
One of the most masterful selections of stories written in the English Language. Each story breathes a life of its own. Cather is not just a great American writer, but one who belongs in the annals of World Literature. In culinary terms, this volume of stories is delicious.
I am not a Willa Cather expert, but I have occasionally read some of her short stories in the past. It was nice to reconnect with her work via these free editions. On the whole, this is a good collection of stories from a noted writer of American literature who is often ignored due to all the bluster and huffing and puffing about other American authors who, I believe, are inferior, namely, Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway. I plan to read more Cather.
